Do You Know “How Your Customers Breathe?”

70735103 Whenever I tried to get away with something as a child, my mother would say "Don’t even try that with me, I know how you breathe."  I knew that my parents had magical powers of seeing behind their heads, and somehow knowing about everything I did – even when they were NOT EVEN THERE!  But, how can they know how I breathe?

Watch, Learn and Know

Now that I’m a mom – I completely understand what they were saying.  And now, I, too know how they could "know how I breathe."  They watched me, even when I didn’t know they were watching.

I didn’t realize how much watching went into parenthood; making sure he didn’t kill himself while walking around, watching for signs of an oncoming potty moment, and a myriad other miniscule body language clues I’ve learned to interpret from a human being that couldn’t articulate what he wanted.

Knowing How Your Customers Breathe

Now you know where this is going.  How do your customers breathe?  Do you know?  Have you watched and learned from their behavior enough to know what they really want before they’re able to articulate it?

Chances are the answer is either no, or it depends on who the customer is.  It seems that the customers we like or the customers with whom we have better relationships seem to be easier for us to connect with.

What will you do today to know how your customers breathe?
