Physics of Marketing Law #32: You Can’t Attract Clients without Action

4216648243Did you ever have an idea, or a phrase or a concept that you thought about?  Maybe you even shared this thought, idea or concept with friends, family and colleagues.  You might have even said to yourself "I should write a book about this."  — but you DIDN’T.  Instead at some point you’re living your life and THERE IT IS – your very idea, your very thought, the concept the book – right out there with someone else getting the glory and the dollar.  All because you didn’t act on time.

That’s what happened to me this morning.  And this time, I’m going to document it – and every other occurrence so that I can remind myself to ACT more and think and dream a little less.

In my blog hopping this morning, I found an terrific article in Brand Autopsy; cleverly titled "The Physics of Marketing…."  It’s a terrific article on brand development and client attraction — and it’s a phrase and concept that I’ve been stewing about for YEARS.  The only problem is — that’s about all I did.  I used the phrase with clients, friends and colleagues and all the while thought – "I need to write a book or article about this…"  just never did.  Actually, started a few posts ago with my Physics of Marketing Law series – but davidebowman of saysomething actually DID something.  He pulled his thoughts together, did some research and wrote a terrific and useful article that’s been picked up.

Some lessons for all of us:

  • The laws of attraction don’t work if you’re only thinking and not doing.
  • Set a goal for yourself to take one, small, promotional-based action on your idea or concept.  There’s no excuse with social tools like blogging, Facebook, Twitter and the plethora of other vehicles to get your idea out there.  Search the blogosphere for posts on the topic – make a comment or two.  Write an article, e-book.  Give a presentation.  Do something, anything.  Just do.
  • Discipline yourself to look for offerings around your concept or topic.  Can you name a service or product after It?  Does it lend itself to bundling with other products or services?  Can you create an event around this idea; invite clients, etc.

How about your ideas?  Tell me about your experiences, what you’ve learned and what you’ve done – maybe some stories too.

    David –

You’re so welcome. I really enjoyed your article as well.

You know how you have that one voice in your head that talks to you?

I postulate that you have other voices, too. Not those voices like Ivana is now nodding and saying, “I just KNEW he was off.” No; more like the backup singers in a band, behind the lead vocalist. These voices, you gotta pay attention to if you want to hear them.

So for me, the trick isn’t just acting on ideas that have been floating around, it’s also about hearing that backup voice when it sings.

Example: You go to a movie, you watch it, you go home. No special thoughts, observations or connections occur to your consciousness. Then, next day, you read the review in the newspaper (that’s SO 1970s, I know), and the big-bucks paid reviewer is writing and you go, “Yeah, now that I read this, I noticed/thought/felt the same thing!” But you couldn’t have said so to your pals on the way out of the show. You had to be triggered. And you’re bummed because you now know you are as smart as the reviewer, if only you could get the thoughts out of the depths and up to the surface.

So – then the trick is to get them up to the surface? Maybe the difference is that you have to really care about something. There are countless times we have the experience you’re talking about. But it’s only the ones WE care about where it’s really important to – trigger them to come to the surface. Maybe it’s the whole thing of making it a ritual to mine thoughts and ideas.

Once you get ‘em to the surface, then what? How do you make them permanent? Maybe keep a journal? Write memos to yourself? Write book reports to yourself? Write random letters and e-mails to friends, addressing various topics where you have made these now-surfaced observations? Post comments on somebody’s website? Even go so far as to, dare I say it, Blog?
